TANGAIL — Three people, including a woman, were killed and 12 others were injured Wednesday when a passenger bus collided with a truck on the Dhaka-Tangail highway in the Baikhola area of Basail upazila, police said.
All the casualties were passengers on the bus. The crash occurred around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The dead were identified as Sohrab Ali Sarkar, 78, of Chaknur village in Sirajganj’s Raiganj upazila; Shilpi Begum, 42, of Kanchanpur village in Jamalpur’s Sarishabari upazila; and Fahim, 22, of Baraipatal village in the same upazila.
According to police and local sources, the Bhai Bhai Paribahan passenger bus, traveling from Tarakandi in Jamalpur, was heading to Dhaka. The bus tried to overtake a Dhaka-bound truck in the Baikhola area when it collided with another truck loaded with iron rods that was also heading to Dhaka. One woman died at the scene. Police rescued 14 injured people and sent them to Tangail General Hospital, where doctors declared two more dead.
