Police exhume four bodies in Chuadanga toxic liquor case

CHUADANGA, Bangladesh — Police have exhumed four of the six bodies of people who died after drinking toxic liquor in Chuadanga, acting on a court order because the bodies had been buried without autopsy, officials said.

The bodies were exhumed Tuesday morning, Oct. 21, from four separate villages in the Dingedaha area of Chuadanga Sadar upazila.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Operations) Jamal Al Naser Ali said the bodies of Laltu Hossain of Pirojkhali village, Mohammad Selim of Khejura village, Kheder Ali of Naforkandi village and Shahidul Mollah of Shankarchandra village, all in Sadar upazila, were exhumed by court order after being buried without autopsy. The bodies will be autopsied at the Chuadanga Sadar Hospital morgue.

Hossen Ali, inspector (operations) at Chuadanga Sadar police station, said several workers in the Dingedaha area of Sadar upazila drank liquor together on the night of Oct. 9. They fell ill and died on Oct. 11.

Family members buried the bodies in secret the same day. Two more died on Oct. 12. The matter then became public, and police completed autopsies on those two bodies on Oct. 12.
