CHOUGACHHA, Bangladesh — A case has been filed at Jashore court against Border Guard Bangladesh Havildar Shahidul over the incident in which Bakul Hossain of Moshwampur village in Chougachha was critically injured after being struck by a vehicle, officials said.
Hossain’s wife, Shahanara, filed the case Wednesday. Senior Judicial Magistrate Zubaida Roshan Ara ordered the Chougachha police station officer-in-charge to accept the complaint as a first information report.
The accused, Havildar Shahidul, is a driver at the Anduliya camp of BGB Battalion 49 in Jashore’s Chougachha upazila.
According to the complaint, Hossain was standing by the roadside near the Shahjadpur BGB camp on the afternoon of Sept. 23. As Havildar Shahidul was driving past, he carelessly struck Hossain. The impact broke Hossain’s hip bone and ripped open his lower abdomen, exposing his intestines. He was rescued in critical condition and first taken to the local health complex and later admitted to the Jashore 250-bed General Hospital.
Local residents detained the BGB vehicle at the time and demanded compensation from Havildar Shahidul. He, however, stalled on paying compensation and eventually left the scene. Hossain’s medical treatment cost about 500,000 taka. His wife borrowed the money from relatives to pay the bills and is struggling to repay it. After failing to reach a settlement with the accused, she filed the case in court.
