JASHORE — Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) detained a man and seized a 173.76-gram gold bar in Jashore Sadar upazila, officials said.
The arrest took place at about 10 a.m. Thursday in the Chanpara Bazar area, BGB said.
The detainee was identified as Basar Sheikh, son of Sohel of Padmadi village in Baliakandi upazila, Rajbari district. The gold bar, hidden in a special compartment around his waist, has an estimated market value of 2,689,109 taka, officials said. A case has been filed at Kotwali police station.
Lt. Col. Saifullah Siddiqui, commander of the Jashore Battalion, said Basar told investigators during initial questioning that he had collected the gold bar in Dhaka and was traveling through Jashore to smuggle it into India. Authorities are investigating whether others were involved, Siddiqui said.
