CHOUGACHHA, Bangladesh — Consumer rights officials in Jashore’s Chougachha upazila fined an ice cream factory 100,000 taka (about $830) Thursday in a raid that found counterfeit branding and unsanitary production conditions, officials said.

The raid was conducted at about noon Thursday, Oct. 23, in the Chhutipur Stand area of Jhikargachha Road. It was led by Selimuzzaman, assistant director of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection in Jashore. Chougachha police station officer-in-charge Anwar Hossain and members of the district police assisted in the operation.

Selimuzzaman said the raid was conducted on the factory based on a tip-off. During the operation, the Kamla Ice Cream Factory was found packaging ice cream, ice pops and cold drinks using the names and logos of Pran and other companies.

He said the factory had been operating illegally without authorization for a long time. “Inside the factory, expired and toxic chemicals were being used by unskilled workers in unsanitary conditions to produce branded products. These products are extremely harmful to children’s health and can damage their kidneys,” he said.

Under the Consumer Rights Protection Act, 2009, the factory was fined 50,000 taka for illegal production and another 50,000 taka for using other companies’ logos, totaling 100,000 taka. The factory owner was ordered to stop such activities in the future.

Chougachha police station officer-in-charge Anwar Hossain confirmed the incident.
