Man stabbed to death at Jashore tea stall

JASHORE — Assailants stormed into a tea stall in Manirampur upazila of Jashore district and stabbed a 35-year-old man to death, police said. A second man was wounded in the attack.

The killing took place at about 9 p.m. Saturday, police said.

The victim was identified as Ashraful Islam, 35, son of Azahar Ali of Mobarakpur village in Chaluahati union of the upazila. He worked as a counter staffer for a bus service called Simanta Paribahan.

The wounded man, Tarek Gazi, 30, also of the same village and son of Abdul Barik Gazi, was admitted in critical condition to the Jashore 250-bed General Hospital.

Witnesses said Ashraful Islam was sitting at a tea stall in Rajganj Bazar talking with Tarek Gazi when three men arrived on a motorcycle. They dismounted, entered the shop and attacked Ashraful, witnesses said. Several blows from a sharp knife struck his chest and he died at the scene. Tarek was wounded as he tried to protect him, witnesses said. Police recovered the body after being informed of the attack.

Manirampur police station officer-in-charge Bablur Rahman Khan said the killing may have stemmed from a prior dispute. An investigation is underway, he said.
