JHIKARGACHHA, Jashore — A 70-year-old man was killed by his grandson-in-law in Jashore’s Jhikargachha upazila in what locals say stemmed from a family dispute. Four others from both sides were injured.
The dead man, Mohiuddin, 70, was a resident of Neelkanthnagar village in Panisara union of the upazila.
According to local sources, Mohiuddin’s granddaughter was married three years ago to Tabibar, son of Montaz of Pagladah village in Jashore. The couple later separated. Around 9 p.m. Sunday, Tabibar arrived at Mohiuddin’s house with five or six associates and tried to take his former wife away by force. When Mohiuddin and his family members tried to stop them, Tabibar and his group attacked them indiscriminately with knives.
Mohiuddin, his wife Tajuma Begum, 60, and relative Aminur Rahman, 30, were seriously injured. At their cries, local residents came forward and confronted the attackers. Tabibar’s associates Ahmmad Ali, 26, and Mohan, 30, were injured in the ensuing violence.
The injured were first taken to Jhikargachha upazila health complex. Mohiuddin was then transferred in critical condition to Jashore Sadar Hospital. He died on the way to Dhaka for further treatment, near Naraill.
Jhikargachha thana Officer-in-Charge Nur Mohammad Gazi confirmed the incident.
