JASHORE — The army has begun dredging 81.5 km across six rivers in Jashore’s Bhabodaha region to ease chronic waterlogging that has plagued the area for years. The 140 crore taka (about $11.7 million) project, executed under army supervision, is expected to benefit more than 1 million people across five upazilas in Jashore, Khulna and Satkhira.

The work began under army supervision. Syeda Rizwana Hasan, environment, forest and climate change and water resources adviser to the interim government, inaugurated the project by video link. Dredging began with excavators removing soil from alongside the Bhabodaha sluice gate. The rivers being dredged are the Sri, Hori, Teka, Harihar, Apar Bhadra and Teligati.

At a discussion, the adviser said the government is trying to ease the suffering caused by waterlogging in Bhabodaha. Calling the waterlogging a deep crisis, she said the government is working through several coordinated projects to find a solution. Thanking the army for joining the dredging effort, she said dredging 81.5 km of six rivers would help drain water from the waterlogged area and would solve short- and medium-term problems. She added that the government is also considering longer-term measures and said everyone must work together to find them.

District Administrator Azaharul Islam, Water Development Board Executive Engineer for Jashore Palash Kumar Banerjee, project director Lt. Col. Mamun Ur Rashid and Water Development Board project director BM Abdul Momin were also present.
