Baul singer Abdur Rahman Gazi dies at 55 in Khulna

KHULNA — Baul singer Abdur Rahman Gazi, a beloved figure in folk music circles, has died at age 55. He breathed his last around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at a private hospital in Khulna.

He was a resident of Batpara in Araji Dumuria village.

His funeral prayer was held at 9 a.m. Thursday at the Dumuria central Eidgah, after which he was buried at the adjacent government cemetery.

Gazi had been suffering from terminal liver cancer for a long time. He was a member of Dumuria’s Jharaphul Baul Academy and was known as a soft-spoken, friendly, humble and gentle man.

Mofizur Rahman Khan, the founder-president of Jharaphul Baul Academy, said Rahman Gazi was a devoted member of the academy and was loved by all. Fellow artists have expressed deep grief at his death.
