PAIKGACHHA, Khulna — Two hilsa fish were caught in a government pond in Khulna’s Paikgachha upazila on Friday afternoon, surprising local fishermen and officials.
The hilsa were pulled up with other fish from a government pond next to the land office in Soladana union.
The Paikgachha upazila executive officer said the two hilsa, weighing 700 grams in total, were caught alongside bhetki, rui and katla. Local residents confirmed the fish were hilsa.
Asked how hilsa could have ended up in the pond, the official said: “Perhaps during flooding the pond bank submerged and hilsa entered. There is no doubt the two fish grew in the pond.”
The Paikgachha upazila senior fisheries officer said the pond is close to a river. Hilsa likely entered with tidal water at some point, then adapted to the pond water and grew there.
