PATUAKHALI — Election Commissioner Md. Anwarul Islam Sarkar said on Friday that the schedule for the upcoming national parliamentary election will be announced in the first week of December and the vote will be held in February next year.

“The Election Commission has already published a detailed work plan for the election,” Sarkar told reporters at the Patuakhali Circuit House. “We want to complete the election before the month of Ramadan.”

Asked about demands for a referendum, he said: “Whether the referendum will be held before or after the election has not yet come up in the commission’s discussions. We have also not received any formal information about the government’s preparations. We will let you know once a decision is made.”

On the issue of proportional representation, he said: “That depends on a political decision. We are waiting for that decision.”

“With everyone’s cooperation, we want to deliver a free, fair and credible election,” Sarkar said.

The election commissioner said the electoral code of conduct and the list of election symbols have been updated. He said registration of expatriate voters will begin in November, and steps are being taken to enable incarcerated voters to cast ballots as well.
