MAGURA — Six people were injured and at least six homes were vandalized and looted when two factions clashed over local dominance in Magura’s Sripur upazila on Saturday morning.
The clash took place at Nohata village in the upazila’s Sobdalpur union, local sources said.
Sohel Ahmed Babu, a union parishad member from Nohata village, and Anichur Rahman Konok, from the same village, had been part of the same local group, sources said. But Babu recently split from Konok’s faction, and tensions between the two sides had been simmering since.
On Saturday morning, members of Babu’s group assaulted Alim Sheikh, 35, Mohsin Mollah, 45, and Sujan Mallik, 42, of Konok’s group in front of Monikul’s shop. As word spread, both sides became involved in a clash with locally made weapons. Alam, 45, Nabil, 25, and Sajal Mridha, 45, of Babu’s group were seriously injured. The injured are being treated at the Magura 250-bed Sadar Hospital and the Sripur Upazila Health Complex.
At least six homes belonging to members of both groups, including Monirul Mridha and Robiul Mridha of Babu’s group, were vandalized and looted. The area remained tense, residents said.
Sripur police station officer-in-charge Idris Ali said the situation was calm and additional police had been deployed in the area.
