MAGURA — The traditional five-day Katyayani Puja festival has begun in Magura amid a festive atmosphere. The festival, which opened with Shashthi Puja, will run until Friday, Oct. 31. The century-old Katyayani Puja has filled the city with a festive mood.
Although Durga Puja is the main religious festival of Bengali Hindus, Magura is something of an exception. Hindus in the region observe Katyayani Puja, held exactly one month after Durga Puja with idols modeled after Durga, as their most important festival.
The main attraction of this year’s Katyayani festival is a colorful gate roughly 90 feet tall built over the New Bazar bridge in the city. The Nijnandyuali area’s Nitai Gaur Gopal Sebashram Puja Celebration Committee built the gate.
Crowds are gathering to see the gate.
Organizers said no such tall gate has previously been built in the district. Built over three weeks by about 30 artisans and workers, the gate has become the city’s main draw.
