JHENAIDAH — Eighty Hindu families in Shailkupa upazila of Jhenaidah have joined Jamaat-e-Islami. The families joined the party Friday evening at a ceremony at a temple in Bhandaripara village in Shailkupa, in the presence of upazila Jamaat Amir A.S.M. Motiur Rahman.
The simultaneous joining by 80 Hindu families has sparked widespread discussion among people across the district.
Bikash, a Hindu community leader in Bhandaripara village, said: “I had long believed in Jamaat’s ideology. Continuing that, 80 families from our three communities have formally joined Jamaat. I believe Jamaat-e-Islami will also protect people of our religion.”
He said they will not just join but will also work to strengthen Jamaat politics.
Shailkupa Upazila Jamaat-e-Islami Amir A.S.M. Motiur Rahman said many members of the Hindu community are now joining the party without hesitation. The Hindu community now wants security, and Jamaat-e-Islami is working to provide that security, he said.
He added: “We want to build a new Bangladesh with people of all religions. We want to give them back their true freedom.”
