MAGURA — Administration officials in Magura’s Mohammadpur upazila recovered 77.835 metric tonnes of rice allocated for Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) beneficiaries from warehouses at Binodpur Bazar.
Members of an investigation committee formed on the instructions of Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Shahinur Akhtar conducted the operation Thursday night and recovered the rice. The committee, led by Upazila Agriculture Officer Md. Abdus Sobhan with Upazila Food Controller Md. Maznur Rahman and Upazila ICT Officer Md. Rafiqul Islam as members, seized the rice from three warehouses at Binodpur Bazar.
Upazila Food Controller Maznur Rahman, a member of the investigation committee, said OMS dealer Hosneara Kanta Ritu was allocated 77.835 metric tonnes of rice last July. However, she did not supply the rice to TCB dealers. She admitted to the investigation committee that the rice was stored in a warehouse at Binodpur Bazar. After the committee submitted its report to the UNO, an operation was conducted that same night on her instructions and the rice was seized from three warehouses. The seized rice is currently stored at government warehouses in Mohammadpur and Binodpur. The license of OMS dealer Hosneara Kanta Ritu has been canceled. Senior authorities will inspect the rice on the ground and issue further instructions.
The upazila administration launched an investigation after allegations against the OMS dealer of embezzling 77 tonnes of allocated rice surfaced in media and on social media. A three-member investigation committee was formed with Upazila Agriculture Officer Abdus Sobhan as convener and Upazila Food Controller Maznur Rahman and ICT Officer Rafiqul Islam as members. After the committee submitted its report, the rice was seized on the UNO’s instructions.
