NARAIL — A cocktail bomb exploded at the home of Asadul Khondoker, a businessman in Narail Sadar upazila, one day after he filed a complaint with police over an extortion demand, officials said. No injuries were reported, but the businessman’s family said they remain in fear for their safety.
The blast occurred around 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, at the businessman’s home in Agdia village of Narail Sadar. Md. Jamil Kabir, inspector of investigation at Narail Sadar police station, confirmed the explosion.
According to the victim’s family and police, an unknown caller phoned Asadul around 9 p.m. on Oct. 27 demanding 6 lakh taka in extortion. About an hour later, another call followed, threatening a bomb attack if the money was not paid. The next day, Oct. 28, the victim filed a complaint at the Sadar police station.
The day after the complaint, on Wednesday, the perpetrators set off the explosion and then called Asadul again to confirm they had made good on their threat, the family said. In the recording of that call, the threatening caller could be heard saying: “Asadul, you said do whatever you can. See if I can or not? Take the phone number and do what you can.”
“They threatened me twice over the phone, using information about my children,” Asadul Khondoker said. “They threatened to throw a bomb if I did not pay 6 lakh taka. On Tuesday, Oct. 28, after going to the Sadar police station with the threateners’ mobile numbers and being unable to file a general diary, I left a complaint. After I filed the complaint, the police did not check on me, but the terrorists came and threw the bomb.”
Narail Sadar police station officer-in-charge Sajedul Islam said an investigation into who was behind the attack would be carried out and that necessary legal action would be taken.
