BAGERHAT — A group of poachers preparing to lay traps for deer at night in the Sundarbans was caught when forest department rangers raided the area, officials said.

Members of Smart Team-1 of the forest department arrested seven poachers from the Hondol area of the Kokilmoni patrol post in the Sharankhola range of the Sundarbans East Forest Division late Saturday, Nov. 2.

During the operation, rangers seized two trawlers flying forest department flags, 100 deer snares, a ladder net, a saw, 20 containers, two drums, an anchor, three tarpaulins, two cooking pots and two thermocol boxes from the scene, the forest department said.

Those arrested are Manoj Pal, 42, of Shaguna village in Bagerhat’s Rampal upazila; Mujibur Rahman, 56, of Baintala village; Munaf Ali Mollah, 22, and Mozammel Sheikh, 52, both of Chanpur village; Khan Tamim, 20, and Wahid Mallick, 36, both of Baroipara village; and Ali Hossain, 45, of Joymoni village in Mongla.

Cases were filed under the Forest Act, and the seven arrested were sent to jail on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 3, through a Bagerhat court.

Md. Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, divisional forest officer of the Sundarbans East Division, said a group was preparing to set deer traps in the Hondol area late at night. “Our Smart Team ran a swift operation and arrested them. Such operations will continue to protect the Sundarbans’ wildlife,” he said.
