DHAKA — A Dhaka court on Thursday barred the former director-general of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Md. Harun-or-Rashid, his wife Fateha Parveen Luna and their two daughters, Fahmida Farah Fabia and Nusrat Yarin Ardita, from leaving the country.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md. Sabbir Faiz issued the order Thursday, Nov. 6, following an application by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), said court bench assistant Md. Riyaz Hossain. Md. Imran Akan, a deputy director of the ACC, filed the application.
The application said an investigating officer had been appointed to examine allegations that Harun-or-Rashid had illegally acquired and laundered 1,000 crore taka (about $82 million).
Reliable sources said Harun-or-Rashid and members of his family were in hiding in the country and could try to leave at any time. Their departure could disrupt the investigation, the application said, making the travel ban essential.
