Pedestrian killed by BRTC bus in Meherpur

MEHERPUR — A pedestrian named Shariful Islam was killed Sunday morning when a Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation bus hit him on the Meherpur-Chuadanga highway in front of the BRAC office in Meherpur town, police said.

The accident occurred about 7 a.m. Shariful Islam was the son of Khademul Islam of the town’s Mallikpara area.

Eyewitnesses said Shariful was crossing the Meherpur-Chuadanga highway when a BRTC bus traveling from Meherpur to Rajshahi struck him. He was thrown to the road and died at the scene. A fire service team reached the scene after being informed and recovered the body.

Shamim Hossain, team leader at the fire service, said the body was recovered based on information from local residents.

Mesbah Uddin, officer-in-charge of Meherpur Sadar police station, said police had been sent to the scene. “The body has been sent to the Meherpur General Hospital morgue for autopsy,” he said. “Legal action will be taken if the family files a complaint.”
