DHAKA — Bangladesh has cut 355 MBBS seats at 37 government medical colleges for the 2025-26 academic year, while adding 75 seats at three other colleges, the Health Ministry said Monday. The net reduction is 280 seats, bringing total enrollment at government medical colleges to 5,100.
The decision was announced in a notification signed by Sanjib Das, senior assistant secretary of the Health Ministry’s medical education division.
The notification said seats at government medical colleges have been reallocated for 2025-26. After the changes, total seat capacity stands at 5,100.
Twenty-five seats each were cut at Dhaka, Chattogram, Mymensingh, Rajshahi, Sylhet MAG Osmani, Sher-e-Bangla in Barishal, Sir Salimullah in Dhaka, and Rangpur medical colleges. Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College’s intake was cut from 230 to 225.
Habiganj Medical College’s seats were reduced to 50. Netrakona, Nilphamari, Naogaon, Magura and Chandpur medical colleges each saw their intake cut by 25 to 50 seats. Three colleges had their seats increased: Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College and Tangail Medical College each gained 25 to reach 125 seats, while Patuakhali Medical College’s intake rose by 25 to 100.
Other government medical colleges retained their existing seats. Cumilla, Khulna, Bogura Shaheed Ziaur Rahman, Faridpur and Dinajpur medical colleges kept 200 seats each. Pabna, Noakhali, Cox’s Bazar, Jashore, Satkhira, Kishoreganj Shaheed Syed Nazrul Islam, Kushtia, Jamalpur and Mugda medical colleges kept 100 seats each. Gopalganj and Manikganj medical colleges kept 125 seats each, while Sunamganj Medical College kept 75.
