MADARIPUR — Activists blocked the Dhaka-Barishal highway in Dasar upazila of Madaripur district by felling trees across the road.
Local leaders and activists of a banned political party began the action from early Sunday, Nov. 16, around the Gopalpur bus stand area and several other points, demanding the enforcement of a shutdown called over Monday’s verdict in the case against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. They felled trees onto the highway and burned tires in protest. All vehicular movement on the highway came to a halt, creating long traffic jams. Long-distance passengers were stranded for hours.
Police and Fire Service personnel began clearing trees from the road and responding to the sabotage.
Mamun Al Rashid, officer-in-charge of Mostafapur Highway Police Station in Madaripur, said: “A group of miscreants blocked the Dhaka-Barishal highway. They fled when they sensed the police presence. We are now working to restore normal traffic.” Sheikh Ehteshamul Islam, officer-in-charge of Dasar Police Station, said trees had been cut and left across the road at seven or eight points in stretches under Dasar and Kalkini stations. Several cocktail explosions were also reported. Clearing of the trees from the road was under way, he said.
