KESHABPUR — The only male of a rare, different-colored langur subspecies was killed by electrocution in Jashore’s Keshabpur on Thursday, Nov. 20. The animal died while jumping across overhead power lines near the Keshabpur upazila health complex while looking for food.
The langur had recently arrived in Keshabpur. Resembling a monkey, the animal had been moving around the city’s Office Para, the upazila health complex, and the Sahapara area along with other black-faced langurs. Atiar Rahman, the van driver who supplied food to the langurs, said the death of the only male of the unusual subspecies has dealt a significant blow to the population’s breeding prospects.
Samiran Biswas, upazila forest officer, said the animal was moving with a group of langurs near the health complex when it was electrocuted Thursday afternoon. After being recovered, the animal was taken to the upazila livestock and veterinary hospital for examination and was later buried.
Alokesh Kumar Sarkar, upazila livestock officer, said forest department workers brought the dead rare langur to the livestock office.
