DHAKA — Six people have been killed in various districts of Bangladesh in Friday’s earthquake, with three deaths in the capital’s Bangshal when a building’s railing collapsed, one child killed in Rupganj of Narayanganj when a wall fell and two deaths reported in Narsingdi.
More than 200 people across the country have been treated for injuries from the powerful earthquake, with many in serious condition, said Dr. Abu Hossain Mohammad Maeenul Ahsan, director of the hospitals and clinics branch of the Health Directorate, in a statement. Emergency medical teams are working at hospitals nationwide to treat the casualties.
In Narayanganj’s Rupganj, a 1-year-old child named Fatema was killed when a wall collapsed during the earthquake. The child’s mother, Kulsum Begum, and a neighbor, Jesmin Begum, were injured, according to reports.
Bhulta police outpost inspector Mokhlesur Rahman said Fatema was killed when a wall collapsed in the earthquake. Her injured mother and the neighbor were taken to a local private hospital.
In Narsingdi, a 75-year-old man named Kazem Ali was killed when the wall of a mud house collapsed on him during the powerful earthquake. He was a resident of Malita Pashchimpara village in Charsindur union of Palash upazila. Separately in Narsingdi’s Gabtali, a 10-year-old boy named Omar was killed when a house wall collapsed on him.
Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus expressed deep sorrow over the deaths and damage caused by the earthquake. In his message of condolence, the chief adviser prayed for the souls of the dead and offered sympathies to the bereaved families. He wished the injured a speedy recovery and directed all relevant agencies to intensify rescue operations in the affected areas.
