PHNOM PENH — A bus lost control and plunged off a bridge into a river in Cambodia’s Kampong Thom province, killing 16 people and injuring more than 24, authorities said.

The crash happened around 3 a.m. Thursday as the bus was traveling from Oddar Meanchey province in the north to the capital, Phnom Penh. The driver is believed to have fallen asleep at the time of the crash, Al Jazeera reported.

Kampong Thom Deputy Police Chief Siv Sovanna told The Associated Press by phone that all those on board were Cambodian nationals. The bus is believed to have been carrying about 40 passengers.

An initial investigation indicated the driver had fallen asleep after departing Siem Reap at night, though it was not clear whether the driver was among the dead.

According to Cambodia’s Ministry of Public Works and Transport, 1,509 people were killed in road accidents in the country in 2024. In the first nine months of 2025, 1,062 people were killed.
