Earthquake injures 10 Dhaka University students fleeing dorms

DHAKA — At least 10 Dhaka University students were injured Friday morning when panic spread through residence halls during an earthquake, with some leaping from buildings and others trampled in stampedes.

Four of the injured suffered broken legs, according to reports.

BBC Bangla reported that cracks appeared on walls at Surya Sen Hall, Sufia Kamal Hall and Shamsunnahar Hall. A group of students from Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall gathered in front of the 20-story Independence Tower building on campus and chanted slogans demanding safe accommodations. The vice chancellor, proctor and treasurer visited the scene and worked to calm the situation.

The 5.7-magnitude quake struck at 10:38 a.m. Friday, with an epicenter in Narsingdi, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department and international seismological agencies.
