DHAKA — The U.S. Embassy in Dhaka expressed deep condolences Friday to those affected by a powerful earthquake that struck the capital and other parts of Bangladesh, killing at least seven people.
In a post on its Facebook page Friday afternoon, the embassy said: “We extend our deepest sympathies to all those affected by today’s earthquake.”
The 5.7-magnitude quake was felt earlier in the day. Its epicenter was in Madhabdi, Narsingdi.
Rubaiyat Kabir, officer in charge of the earthquake observation center at the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, said it was the strongest and highest-magnitude earthquake recorded in and around Dhaka in several decades.
