DHAKA — Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami chief Dr. Shafiqur Rahman expressed deep sorrow over the casualties from Friday’s powerful earthquake that struck the capital and other parts of the country.
In a statement issued Friday (November 21), Shafiqur Rahman extended condolences over the loss of life.
“A powerful earthquake was felt at 10:38 a.m. Friday (November 21) in the capital Dhaka and various parts of the country. At least six people, including two children, have already been killed in Dhaka and Narsingdi. Nearly 300 people are confirmed injured, including Dhaka University students, factory workers in Gazipur and people in Narsingdi, the epicenter of the quake, and other parts of the country. I express deep sorrow over this tragic loss of life,” he said in the statement.
“I pray for the salvation of the souls of the deceased and extend my deep sympathies to the families of the dead and injured. May Allah grant patience to the bereaved families,” he said.
“I call on the relevant authorities to ensure proper treatment for the injured and to compensate the dead and injured. I also pray for the speedy recovery of those hurt,” he said.
“It must be strictly monitored whether high-rise buildings are being constructed in line with the building code. It is also the government’s duty to make the public more aware of how to reduce earthquake damage. I hope the public will be able to overcome this disaster with patience and courage, God willing,” Shafiqur Rahman said.
