MEHERPUR — A young man named Tasim was killed when two motorcycles collided head-on in Gangni upazila, police said.

The accident occurred around 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 21, on the Meherpur-Kushtia highway in front of Mozammel Haque’s home in Akubpur village in Mathmura union.

Tasim was the son of A. Latif of Hidirampur village in Kushtia’s Mirpur upazila. The injured were identified as Akash, 20, son of Ramjan Ali of Hidirampur village in Mirpur upazila in Kushtia; Raja, 20, son of Mizanur Rahman of the same village; Jisan, 22, son of motorcyclist Khokon of Mahishkundi Mistripara in Daulatpur upazila of Kushtia; and an unidentified young man who was with him.

According to residents, Akash and Raja were among four young men racing motorcycles from Kholisakundi to Bamundi. As they were passing a bus, they collided head-on with Jisan’s motorcycle coming from the opposite direction. Tasim died at the scene.

Akash, Raja, Jisan and the unidentified passenger were quickly rescued and admitted to Kushtia Medical College Hospital, where they are being treated.

Residents alleged that motorcycle racing on the highway is a near-daily occurrence, and the lack of any controls is steadily increasing the risk of accidents.

Gangni police station Officer-in-Charge Bani Israil said police inspected the scene on receiving the report and were taking necessary legal action.
