PATUYAKHALI — Two hundred and fifty families in Kalapara, Patuyakhali, received free winter vegetable seeds on Sunday in a program meant to encourage seasonal cultivation.

The seeds — red amaranth, spinach, okra, tomato, coriander, bitter gourd and radish — were distributed at 11 a.m. by the Center for Rural Service Society (CRSS), a private development organization, under its Safe Life and Livelihoods project. The project is supported by the Netherlands-based aid agency Kerk in Actie (KIA).

The event was chaired by Md. Nahid Hasan, administrator of Nilganj union parishad, and moderated by Albart Sabulan Biswas, organizer of the Safe Life and Livelihoods project. Matilda Tina Baidya, portfolio coordinator of KIA Bangladesh, attended as chief guest.

Nilganj UP panel chairman Zahirul Islam, journalist Mainuddin Al Atik and union parishad entrepreneur Md. Sagir Matubbar attended as special guests.

Project manager Basudev Guha, finance coordinator Khokon Chandra Dey, program coordinator Rigbi Sethu Gomez and agriculture officer Uttam Kumar Kar were also present.

Speakers at the event explained proper methods for sowing, tending, fertilizing and applying pesticides to vegetables and stressed the importance of vegetable farming for self-reliance. Recipient families expressed satisfaction at receiving the seeds. Authorities said such initiatives would continue to support safe livelihoods and food security.
