DHAKA — Attorney General Md. Asaduzzaman said laws that gag the press and silence journalists must be abolished, and that all cases filed under the Digital Security Act could be dropped by December.

Asaduzzaman made the remarks Monday afternoon at a hotel in the capital, speaking at the launch of a report titled “Media Freedom in Bangladesh: The Experience of the Digital Security Act.”

Repealing the law alone will not be enough, he said. The next government must also move away from coercive practices, he said. The Digital Security Act, which the Awami League government enacted after scrapping Section 57 of the ICT Act and after consultations with stakeholders, was a betrayal of everyone involved, Asaduzzaman said.
