DHAKA — Bangladesh’s Election Commission wants observer organizations to act as partners in the next election, but observers must not get involved in politics, Chief Election Commissioner A.M.M. Nasir Uddin said Tuesday.

The role of observer groups is to monitor the polls, Nasir Uddin said during a meeting with representatives of 81 domestic election observer organizations at the Election Building in Agargaon, Dhaka.

“The commission has one agenda: to deliver a fair election to the nation,” Nasir Uddin said. “The duty of observer groups is to highlight irregularities in the voting, not to get involved in politics.”

“We want to give the nation a credible election,” he added. “We want to learn from the mistakes of the past and move forward. For that, we need everyone’s cooperation.”
