The chief election commissioner (CEC), A M M Nasir Uddin, will meet the acting Speaker, Kaisar Kamal, on Tuesday over the schedule for the presidential election.
The meeting will be held at 11am on Tuesday in the acting Speaker’s room at the parliament secretariat.
The secretary of the parliament secretariat, Barrister Md Golam Sarwar Bhuiyan, gave the information.
Bangladesh’s 22nd president, Md Sahabuddin, resigned on Friday, 24 July. He submitted his resignation letter to the Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad that afternoon. The formally signed resignation letter was sent to Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed in accordance with article 50(3) of the constitution. Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed has since been serving as acting president.
In his resignation letter the president cited serious physical illness — in particular the diagnosis of a complex condition called “autonomic neuropathy.” He said that because of the need for long-term treatment and his physical and mental incapacity, it was no longer possible for him to discharge the duties of a constitutional office as important as the presidency.
In the letter addressed to the Speaker, Md Sahabuddin noted that he has long suffered from heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and kidney complications. He had also previously undergone bypass surgery on his heart.
The day after the president’s resignation, on 25 July, the minister for local government, rural development and cooperatives, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, said who the new president would be would be settled at a meeting of the party’s policymaking forum. A final decision would be taken after discussion at a meeting of the party’s standing committee in accordance with the constitution and the necessary laws.
