DHAKA — Bangladesh’s advisory council on Tuesday approved the Referendum Ordinance, formalizing earlier in-principle approval of a referendum law.
The draft Referendum Ordinance 2025 received policy and final approval at a special meeting of the advisory council, presided over by Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus, that began at 11 a.m.
The chief adviser had earlier approved the referendum law at an advisory council meeting on Nov. 20, Law Adviser Asif Nazrul told a briefing at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka.
Nazrul said the advisory council also gave final approval to establish a separate Supreme Court Secretariat to safeguard judicial independence. The secretariat will oversee all matters concerning lower court judges, meaning the government will no longer have control over them. The change will take effect after the secretariat is formed, he said.
