KUSHTIA — Police recovered the body of Sumi Akter, 26, a former Dhaka University student, hanging in her home in Mirpur upazila early Monday, authorities said.
Her body was recovered at dawn Nov. 24 from her home in Ambaria village, Mirpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mominul Islam confirmed.
Akter was the daughter of farmer Golap Rahman of Ambaria village. She had been a student in the 2018-19 batch of Dhaka University’s Sanskrit department.
Before her death, Sumi posted a message on Facebook reading “SORRY 2 ME….” — which she explained meant she was apologizing to herself, that there was nothing more she could have done.
Classmates said Sumi had been suffering for years from fibrous dysplasia and other serious physical complications. The disease had eroded her bones, and despite multiple surgeries her condition did not improve. Long-term severe pain, restricted mobility and physical weakness had left her mentally exhausted, they said.
Despite her illness, Sumi had always tried to lead a normal life and continue her studies, classmates said. She had been treated at various doctors and hospitals but found no lasting solution.
They added that she had grown weary from her constant pain and from her frustration at not being able to do more for her family. Although she fought alone, she could not handle the situation in the end, they said.
Sumi’s aunt Mosammat Kanchani said Sumi’s parents found her hanging in her room before the dawn Fajr prayer and cut her down with a rope. Police arrived in the morning, reviewed her medical reports, took her father to the station and authorized burial. Her funeral prayers were held after midday prayers, the family said.
Asim Sarkar, chair of Dhaka University’s Sanskrit department, said Sumi was a bright and quiet student. “The girl was very good and brilliant. She had to take a year off from her studies due to illness. We cannot accept that she is gone like this. All of us in the department are grieving. We hope this never happens to any other student.”
Mominul Islam, the Mirpur police officer-in-charge, told reporters: “A Dhaka University student named Sumi has died by suicide. I went to the scene. Her body was found hanging.”
