BOGURA — Local students and residents detained two suspected drug dealers carrying 4 kilograms of cannabis at Santahar Railway Junction Station in Adamdighi upazila on Tuesday and turned them over to railway police.
The students became suspicious when one of the men, disguised as passengers, ran while disembarking a local train at midday, police said. They caught both men and found 4 kg of cannabis wrapped in tape inside a school bag.
The detained were identified as Rashedul Islam, 35, son of Jamir Uddin of Durakuti village in Lalmonirhat district, and Aminul Islam, 33, son of the late Anis Ali of Shashan Colony village in the same district.
Aminul Islam, a ninth-grade student, said: “My friends and I were returning home from school after our annual exams. While passing through the station, we saw two men get off the train, and one tried to run away. We became suspicious, caught him with our friends, and recovered the cannabis from their bag before handing them over to police.”
Santahar Railway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Habibur Rahman Habib thanked the students and said preliminary questioning indicated the men had been selling cannabis across various areas by train for a long time. The two were charged under narcotics laws and sent to the Bogura district jail in the afternoon, he said.
