ISLAMABAD — Biman Bangladesh Airlines is preparing to operate three weekly flights from Bangladesh to Karachi, the Bangladeshi envoy to Pakistan said Wednesday.

Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to Pakistan, Md. Iqbal Hossain Khan, made the comments to reporters after addressing the Foreign Services Academy in Pakistan.

“Yes, we are starting direct flights with Pakistan. Our national flag carrier will operate three weekly flights to Karachi,” Khan said.

Asked whether the route would use Indian airspace, he said: “Just as Indian aircraft can use Bangladesh’s airspace, Biman’s flights will also use Indian airspace.”

The prospects of Pakistani airlines launching flights to Dhaka soon are low because of India’s ban on Pakistani use of its airspace.

On Pakistan-Bangladesh relations, the high commissioner said there was considerable scope to expand bilateral trade. “But without direct access, trade is limited. In the past, the two countries traded directly by rail. Now Pakistani dates reach regional markets via Dubai,” he said.
