NOAKHALI — Police recovered a Chinese-made rifle that was looted from the Chatkhil police station during the unrest of Aug. 5 from a pond on the station’s premises Thursday, officials said.

Officers acting on a tip retrieved the weapon around 4:30 p.m., police said. The rifle was among arms seized from the Chatkhil police station after attackers stormed and set fire to the building on Aug. 5. Police said they had no information on who threw the weapon into the pond.

According to the Chatkhil police station, two assistant sub-inspectors entered the pond and recovered the rifle after a search. The weapon contained no ammunition. Police believe one of the attackers dropped the rifle into the pond during the assault and arson on Aug. 5.

On Aug. 5, the day the Awami League government fell, eight weapons were looted from the Chatkhil police station and three from the Khilpara police outpost, along with a large quantity of ammunition. The station’s losses included three Chinese rifles. Of all the looted weapons and ammunition, only one Chinese rifle and 312 rounds of Chinese rifle ammunition have been recovered to date. Police efforts to recover the rest are continuing.

Firoz Uddin Chowdhury, officer-in-charge of the Chatkhil police station, said a Chinese rifle looted from the station on Aug. 5 was recovered from the station pond Thursday afternoon. “The weapon was recovered based on a tip,” Chowdhury said. “There was no ammunition inside.” Chowdhury said this is the first of 11 weapons looted from the station to be recovered. Earlier, 312 rounds of Chinese rifle ammunition had been recovered.
