CHATTOGRAM — A third person has died from injuries sustained in a gas cylinder explosion in the Chandanaish area of Chattogram, hospital officials said.

Mahbubur Rahman, 45, died while undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka late Sunday night, raising the death toll from the blast to three, officials said.

Rahman, the son of Kabir Ahmed Bhuiyan, was from the South Boltali village in the Chandanaish area of Chattogram. Earlier, two others identified as Mohammad Idris, 27, and Mohammad Yusuf, 30, had died from injuries in the same incident.

Dr. Shawon Bin Rahman, the hospital’s resident surgeon, said Rahman had suffered burns on 50 percent of his body and died at 2:40 a.m. Sunday while in the intensive care unit. Another person injured in the same incident, identified as Riaz, remains under treatment at the institute.

The explosion occurred early Wednesday at a gas cylinder warehouse in the Sayedabad area on the border of the Chandanaish and Satkania upazilas in Chattogram. Ten people, including the warehouse owner, Mahabubul Alam, were injured. Fire spread after the blast and destroyed the warehouse.

Local sources said gas was being illegally refilled from large cylinders into smaller ones at the warehouse.
