RANGAMATI — A wild elephant and her calf died during birth in Rangamati’s Rajasthali upazila on Tuesday, the forest department said.
The bodies of the mother and the newborn were recovered around 1:30 p.m. from the Kaitongpara area of Gaindya union, forest officials said.
Puchimong Marma, chairman of the Gaindya union parishad, said local residents found the mother elephant and the calf dead in the forest that morning. After they reported it, forest department staff went to the scene and recovered both bodies.
Md. Sajjaduzzaman, divisional forest officer of the Rangamati South Forest Division, said the calf became half-stuck in the birth canal during delivery, and both the mother and the calf died. Details about the cause of death will be known after an autopsy, he said.
