RANGAMATI — A 65-year-old widow long battling poverty in a remote village in Rangamati’s hill district has been given a new home by the Bangladesh Army, restoring hope to her life, officials said.

Lungachhari Chakma had been struggling for years in the remote Labarpara village of Juraichhari, in Rangamati’s hill tracts. Her husband’s death seemed to take all the light from her life. The patched-up tin and bamboo hut she lived in turned stormy and rainy nights into ordeals. Worn down by her hardship, she had broken under the weight of it all. The new home from the Bangladesh Army has restored hope to her life.

The moment felt like a new birth for Lungachhari. Holding the keys to the house, she could not contain herself, and tears of joy ran down her face.

“I had nothing else to wish for. I just wanted a safe roof over my head,” Lungachhari said. “That dream came true today. I am forever grateful to the army.”

Upazila Executive Officer Md. Bayezid-Bin-Akhand, Juraichhari union parishad chairman Imon Chakma, Banajogichhara union parishad chairman Santosh Bikash Chakma, Dumdumya union parishad chairman Shanti Raj Chakma and other local notables attended the handover. All wore smiles of satisfaction, officials said.
