DHAKA — BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, who is undergoing treatment in critical condition at Evercare Hospital in the capital, is in stable condition, party officials said. She is under close observation by a team of local and foreign doctors.
Her son and BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman has been in constant contact with the doctors for updates on his mother’s condition. Tarique Rahman’s wife, Dr. Zubaida Rahman, has remained at her mother-in-law’s side at the hospital.
Preparations to take Khaleda Zia abroad for treatment have also been kept ready. However, the BNP said any decision on sending her abroad would depend solely on the medical board’s assessment of her physical condition. Khaleda Zia’s well-wishers across the BNP and the country are continuing to pray for her recovery. The BNP has urged the public not to spread rumors about her health.
Asked about Khaleda Zia’s current condition on Monday, Dec. 8, Shairul Kabir Khan, a member of the BNP’s media cell, said, citing her personal physician Dr. A.Z.M. Zahid Hossain: “The party chairperson’s physical condition is stable. The medical board meets tonight. After that, we will know whether there is any change in Madam’s condition.”
Zubaida Rahman arrived at Evercare Hospital at 3:33 p.m. Monday to visit Khaleda Zia.
Dr. Rafiqul Islam, BNP central health affairs secretary and a physician, said: “Madam’s treatment includes regular tests. Dr. Zubaida Rahman is overseeing her treatment as part of the medical team.”
Earlier, Khaleda Zia’s personal physician Dr. A.Z.M. Zahid Hossain said: “The chairperson’s medical security is now our top priority. The local and foreign doctors treating her are also giving the highest importance to her physical condition. Whenever the medical board decides she can fly safely, she will be taken abroad.”
Khaleda Zia, 80, has long suffered from heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, liver cirrhosis, kidney complications and other medical conditions. She was rushed to Evercare Hospital on Nov. 23 after experiencing breathing difficulties.
