RAJSHAHI — A fisherman has landed a 76-kilogram baghair catfish in the Padma River in Rajshahi’s Godagari upazila, in what he called the biggest catch of his career.

The fish was caught around 11:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10, in the Harishankarpur area of Godagari, in a net belonging to fisherman Md. Masum.

Speaking Saturday evening, Nov. 11, Masum said he had gone fishing on the Padma on Friday evening as usual. “There were four of us,” he said. “After several hours of trying, the fish came up in our net deep in the night.”

“It weighed 76 kg when we measured it,” Masum said. “I have been fishing for 18 years and have never caught such a big fish. This is the first time I have landed one this large.” He said the fish was cut and sold in the local market at 800 taka per kilogram, fetching a total of 80,000 taka.

Masum said he was thrilled to have caught the giant fish, which was sold by Saturday afternoon. Because the family could not find buyers for the whole fish, it had to be cut up for sale, fetching a lower price, he said. “Other times it would have sold for 1,200 to 1,300 taka per kilogram, but this time it had to go for 800 taka. Even so, I am very happy.”

Hundreds of people gathered at the Harishankarpur market to see the giant baghair, with many taking selfies with the fish, witnesses said.
