Two killed as pickup van overturns in Sitakunda

CHATTOGRAM — Two people were killed and one injured when a pickup van carrying betel leaf overturned in the Banshbaria area of Sitakunda upazila in Chattogram, police said.

The accident occurred around 10 p.m. Saturday on the Dhaka-bound lane of the Dhaka-Chattogram highway. The dead were identified as Kamal Chowdhury, 53, and Sameer Chowdhury, 54. The injured man was identified as Ujjwal Chowdhury, 49. Sameer Chowdhury’s home is in the West Dewannagar area of Hathazari thana in Chattogram. Kamal Chowdhury and Ujjwal Chowdhury are from the Haidgaon area of Patiya upazila.

Highway police said the casualties were betel leaf traders. They were traveling in a pickup van loaded with betel leaf from the Haidgaon area of Patiya upazila to Mithachhara market in Mirsharai upazila. Their pickup van reached the North Banshbaria area of Banshbaria union in Sitakunda around 10 p.m., lost control, overturned and fell into a roadside ditch. After the accident, the three were rescued and taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital, where two were declared dead. The driver fled the scene leaving the vehicle behind.

Bar Auliya highway police station officer in charge Abdul Momin confirmed the accident. The bodies are at the Chittagong Medical College Hospital morgue. The vehicle was recovered around 12 a.m., and a case has been filed at Sitakunda thana under the Road Transport Act, he said.
