DHUNAT, Bangladesh — Police have arrested a Jubo League leader in connection with a 2022 attack on a Bangladesh Nationalist Party office in Bogura’s Dhunat upazila that included beatings of BNP workers, vandalism and the burning of party banners.

Mahmudul Hasan Mithu, 32, was arrested from his home on Tuesday evening, Dec. 23. He is a member of the Bhandarbari union Jubo League and the son of Jahangir Alam from Narayanpur village.

According to the case file, the attack took place on May 30, 2022, on the second floor of the Hotel Arafat building in Dhunat Bazar, where BNP workers had gathered for a doa mahfil — a Muslim prayer ceremony — to seek mercy for the soul of slain President Ziaur Rahman.

Awami League activists entered the office during the ceremony and assaulted those present, vandalized the premises and set fire to party banners, the case file said.

Jubo Dal leader Imdadul Haque Roni filed a case at Dhunat police station on Nov. 12, 2024, naming 61 Awami League members and 60 unidentified people. Mithu was arrested as one of the unidentified accused.

Sub-Inspector Mostafiz Alam, second officer at Dhunat police station, said Mithu was not named in the original complaint but evidence of his involvement emerged during the investigation. He was sent to jail through a Bogura court on Wednesday. Efforts are underway to arrest the other accused, Alam said.
