HABIGANJ — Law enforcers have detained three people, including a former Anti-Discrimination Student Movement leader, on charges of extortion in Habiganj. They were detained from the Chowdhury Bazaar area of the town late Tuesday night.
Those arrested are Enamul Haque, also known as Sakib, 24, a resident of Umednagar in Habiganj municipality and former joint convener of the district unit of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement; Shihab Ahmed, 20, of the Umednagar (Puranhati) area; and Md. Mosharaf, 19, of Nasarpur village in Sadar upazila.
According to police and local sources, the accused, led by Enamul Haque, went to a business called Al Madina Traders in the Chowdhury Bazaar area on Tuesday night. They demanded 2 lakh taka in extortion from the owner, Mohammad Sheikh Jamal Mia. An argument broke out and bystanders rushed to the spot. They detained the men inside the shop. An army patrol passing the area went to investigate after seeing the commotion. After the owner filed a complaint, the army detained the three men and handed them over to Sadar police station.
Mahdi Hasan, general secretary of the district unit of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, did not respond to repeated calls on his mobile phone. A leader of the organization, who did not want to be named, said Enamul Haque had been a joint convener of the district unit. He had been expelled from the party several months ago over controversial activities and had served jail time on a similar charge a few months ago, the leader said.
Mosharaf Hossain, the officer-in-charge of Sadar police station, said the businessman Mohammad Sheikh Jamal Mia had filed a case against the three men under the Speedy Trial Act. The accused were shown arrested in that case and sent to jail through the court on Wednesday.
