Miscreants sprayed liquid weedkiller at night on about an acre of fruiting brinjal plants in Chhoyghati mouza of Paltapur union, Birganj upazila, Dinajpur, killing the plants along with their fruit.

Local people say it may have been done out of revenge or an old grudge. The farmer, Dulal Hossain, son of the late Mofaz Uddin, said the poisoning of his crop on mortgaged land had caused a loss of more than Tk 1 lakh. A written complaint has been filed with Birganj police, who have inspected the field.

Dulal said he had taken the land on mortgage, and that a family dispute is under way involving the people who held it before him, but he is not sure who did it.

On a visit on Saturday, bunches of brinjals were seen hanging from almost every plant, but most plants were dying from the poison. The sub-assistant agriculture officer for Paltapur union advised watering the field quickly, but Dulal said that had not helped.

The local union parishad chairman, Touhidul Islam, and others condemned the incident. Birganj police station officer-in-charge Saiful Islam confirmed receiving the complaint and said it may have been done out of an old grudge; police have investigated the scene and the culprits will be found and brought to justice, he said.
