Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed that a specific policy be drawn up on nationalising educational institutions, instead of proposals being brought forward haphazardly. Under the policy, only institutions that meet the conditions set for nationalisation will later be brought under it.

The prime minister gave the instruction to Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon last Wednesday. A source at the education ministry confirmed the matter.

Ministry sources said proposals to nationalise educational institutions had been coming in piecemeal from across the country. The stream of proposals for one institution after another came to the prime minister’s attention, and he then directed the education minister to prepare a clear policy.

The policy is expected to spell out which types of institution will get priority, what conditions must be met and the criteria on which institutions will be selected.

Once it is in place there will be no scope to nationalise an institution arbitrarily or in isolation. Only institutions that meet the qualifications and conditions set out in the policy will be considered, it is learnt.

This is expected to ensure transparency in selecting institutions and make it easier to scrutinise nationalisation proposals.
