The family of a murdered man and local villagers in Narail formed a human chain and marched in protest at the removal of key accused from the charge sheet in the Mostafa Kazi murder case. Kazi, 75, was killed in Polidanga village in Narail Sadar.

The human chain and procession were held at Bhadrabila bazaar on Friday afternoon (6 November) under the banner of the people of Bhadrabila union.

Speakers included the plaintiff, Kazi Amjad Hossain, Munsur Ali Khan, July uprising fighter Shafiqul Islam, Hafizur Rahman, Zaman Sheikh and Respiar, along with people of various professions.

The speakers alleged that the case’s investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Sagar Sikder of Narail Sadar police station, did not conduct a fair and impartial investigation and, in return for improper benefits, filed a charge sheet against nine people, leaving out 19 accused, including the main accused Imrul, Humayun, Tarikul and Akib. They said the statements of important witnesses and other evidence in the case were not properly considered. A no-confidence petition against the charge sheet was filed in court on Wednesday.

The speakers said that if the key accused are dropped from the charge sheet, the real culprits will escape justice and the victim’s family will be denied it. They called for a prompt, impartial investigation of the case, and for an inquiry into the allegations against SI Sagar.

SI Sagar, the investigating officer, said the allegations against him were not true. “I visited the scene and used witness statements, technology and local sources. The charge sheet against the accused was filed on that basis. I have informed my superiors about this,” he said.

According to the victim’s family, a dispute arose between young men of Polidanga-Maharag and Bhadrabila villages over football on a local field. On the afternoon of 3 July, Mostafa Kazi was walking from his home towards the local bazaar to settle the dispute. On the way, the accused, lying in wait in a clump of banana trees, hacked him and beat him with hammers in a planned attack, killing him. On 4 July his son, Kazi Amjad Hossain, filed a case at Narail Sadar police station against 28 people.
