Police have recovered the body of a four-year-old boy, his throat cut and his body stuffed in a sack, about six hours after he went missing while out playing in Damudya, Shariatpur. The body was found in a pond in the West Adashan area of Damudya upazila at around 1pm on Saturday. Police have detained a 22-year-old man on suspicion of involvement.

According to police and local people, the boy went out to play at around 7am on Saturday and did not come home. His family searched for him and then informed police, and police and firefighters searched the area before finding his body in a sack in a pond behind a neighbour’s house. Damudya police said the child’s throat had been cut.

Relatives allege that the family had quarrelled with the neighbour over a trivial matter on Friday evening, and that the boy was killed in revenge and dumped in the pond in a sack.

“Yesterday evening my mother had a quarrel with him, and she told me about it at night. On Saturday morning I came back from the market and found my son missing. I went to the police station and filed a general diary, and after a long search police and firefighters found my son’s body,” the boy’s father said, weeping. “They killed my son. I want justice.”

Tension spread after the body was found, and an angry crowd set fire to the accused neighbour’s house, local sources said. Police detained the neighbour’s son. No member of the neighbour’s family could be reached for comment, as they were not at home.

Damudya police station officer-in-charge Mohammad Jahangir Alam said a child’s body had been recovered from Adashan village in Shidhalkura union and one person detained on suspicion. The case is being investigated, and those involved will be brought to justice, he said.
