Police have recovered 10 crude bombs, known locally as cocktails, and two banners in Tongi, Gazipur. The find on Saturday morning (3 October) in the Gutiar Andharul area caused alarm among residents. Police cordoned off the area and tightened security, and a bomb disposal team was sent to defuse the devices.
According to police and local people, residents saw the bombs lying in front of a house in the Gutiar Andharul area under Tongi West police station in the morning and informed police. A team from the station cordoned off the area, which police had been guarding since around 2am.
Tongi West police station officer-in-charge Mohammad Arifur Rahman confirmed the recovery of the 10 bombs and two banners, and said the bomb disposal team had been called to defuse them.
The two banners announce a protest march demanding the lifting of the ban on the Awami League, the annulment of court verdicts and the release of jailed leaders, and carry the names of several local Jubo League and Chhatra League activists from Tongi West and Ward 52.
The find has caused concern locally, but it could not immediately be confirmed who left the bombs there or whether they are linked to the banners. Police said the bombs would be defused and the incident investigated, with legal action against anyone involved.
